Dear society, please let live

Our society is such that if the rapist and rape victim are on the same platform, at least there will be a few (if not a lot) people (sadly women too) who will point fingers at the rape victim. I particularly mentioned women because we are very far away from that time when a male rape victim can come out and say that someone raped him. And that has become something we live with and accept or compromise with thinking its ought to happen. Being a youngster I expect my generation to be people without the prejudices that pull others back but what I get to see only disheartens me more. Of course there are people who are just the kind that the society needs, they are free thinkers but being very small in number that shouts, those rebellious voices somewhere fade out. What I talked about is just to make us realise the nth time that what our society is largely like.

And then this society, this very society which looks down upon a rape victim, which looks down upon a divorcee, which looks down upon effeminate guys and masculine girls, which looks down upon girls who stay out till late at night, which looks down upon women wearing short dresses, which looks down upon gays and lesbians is a place where we looks for approval and acceptance. This society decides for us what is normal and what is not. Things like ‘Men do not cry’ and ‘Women should know their limits’ are the jigsaws where we try to fit ourselves in.

This society which does not pay your bills and keeps gifting us boundaries and limits crossing which we feel  we have wronged will decide on what we should wear and whom I should love? Marry for society. Make sure whom you marry is of opposite gender for society. Make sure whom you marry is of your religion and caste for society. Have kids for society. Have more kids for society. Put the kids in good school for society. Buy an expensive car and take your kids to school in that car for society. Shout on your wife to prove your manliness to society. Be a meek and timid woman in front of your husband to prove your worth as a wife to society. Our whole life goes in doing things for acceptance from the society, to prove things to people who matters the least.

A gay boy/girl has to remain in closet because the society feels it’s not normal. Transgender/Transsexual children are given away by their parents to be brought up by eunuchs because they feel that the society won’t accept it, that the society will point fingers at them. Which society are we talking about? If the society parts a child from her/his parents just because the child is not of a gender which the society thinks is ‘normal’ then do we actually need acceptance and approval from this society?

If society thinks you are asocial/anti-social just because you do not abide by the norms of society, let them think so. The only thing we need to do is ignore such people. They have never mattered and will not matter either. So does that make me a misanthropist? Not at all. Does that make me a terrorist? Never. As long as I am doing what I think is right and that is not harming anyone as such other than the moral polices who might be getting heart attacks I am on the right path. And as far as people are concerned, we do not need too many people in our lives. If we are lucky enough to get like minded people or people who love us for what we are then its a blessing. Else, at the end of the day if we feel we are doing the right thing and we will keep doing it because that is making us happy and if we can face ourselves in the mirror and smile saying ‘I love You’, that’s all the positivity that one needs. All we need is love and if the society is not willing to give it, we should make sure to shower it on ourselves.

Every person has the right to live, the right to open air and boundless sky. No one should draw the limits for anyone else. The boundary if at all needed will be decided by us and not the ever policing society. Compromising on real issues the society has always tried to press down people who have been gentle and so however weak the uproar is, it has to be there. If we have to stand beside anything that is right, never should the thought come to my mind that what I will gain from it individually. If supporting LGBT right makes you gay, supporting women right makes you effeminate then does supporting animal rights make you an animal too? The society cannot decide anything for anyone and if they are deciding, they have to start paying my bills too else I am not ready to let anyone get into my kitchen or bedroom or even into my mind. The society keeps lying, the poking Pinocchio’s nose keeps growing every moment and now the poke is hurting. Stop it!
