The legacy of a poet - Kazi Nazrul Islam, the prophet of tolerance

Image
Kazi Nazrul Islam's works have been acclaimed as well as criticized for egoism, but his admirers who supported him throughout his life, considered this as self-confidence more than ego. They said that he had the ability to defy God and yet be devoted. Was a Bengali poet, writer, musician, revolutionary and philosopher who is best known for pioneering works in Bengali expressing fierce rebellion against society, tradition, politics, injustice, intolerance and oppression. Popularly known as the Bidrohi Kobi – Rebel Poet – he is widely popular and revered in India and commemorated as the "national poet" of Bangladesh. Nazrul lacked any formal training as a journalist or artist, and appears to have built  his artistic experience through his participation in folk musical troupes in his youth.  After two years of high school, Nazrul joined the army of the British colonial government. Stationed in Karachi during World War One, as part of the Bengal regiment,  he ros...

The vote of thought (Part 3) - We were not about told these before the 'change'!

Image
Its a week, that a political change took place in West Bengal! From today we will have our new chief minister and her cabinet too! We all (most of us) are hoping for a brighter and better tomorrow! We will see that later and hope someday i will write about the goods and bads about this ministry! But for now i will like to highlight on things that are happening against what we were told by the oppositions before the elections i.e. 'badla nay badol chai'  or 'we don't want revenge, we want change'! Within a week, several CPI(M) people have been beaten up and many others are death struck with fright! So many families cannot return to their houses! This was not what we were told! What i felt really bad seeing today's newspaper, is that a very elderly CPI(M) leader of  Ghatal, Seikh Israel has been beaten up badly by TMC(Trinamool Congress) supporters! Israel is very old and is a cancer patient, he even has heart disease and beating up such a person is what comes u...

The Legacy of a Woman - Mother Teresa

Image
How should we understand this woman and her views of the world and beyond? by any measure, Mother Teresa has fascinated the world by being a complete and utter contrarian. No modern day view of the church and its mission for her; rather, a strong, simplistic approach to charity and to religious works. Her heroism is based on the belief of the dignity of the individual, no matter how poor, how sick or how low on the social pecking order he or she maybe. While not everyone can and will agree with the particulars of her activities and programmes, she remains far and away the most admired individual of the late 20th century. Her life, teachings and good works represent a call to all of us to come to the aid of those neglected by the world or simply ignored or forgotten. She is and will remain a hero with unparalleled personal and spiritual appeal.

Watched two movies recently - 'Kagojer Bou' and 'Luv ka the end'

Image
'Kagojer Bou' or 'The paper wife' is a non-commercial film by Bappaditya Banerjee! Starring rahul, Paoli, Priyanka, Raimjhim Gupta, Jayanto in significant roles! its a genre which i love to watch! Revolves around money, marriage and extra marital affair! Rahul's acting is bold enough! So is Paoli and Rimjhim! Priyanka's role could have been better carried out by someone else! The plot is simple but towards the end give a big twist and their lies the significance of the title! Music is nice, especially the folk number! The story takes an abrupt turn towards the end which is not very likely! It shows how lust and need of money make people do so many things without even thinking of the result! A nice watch for audience loving ' hatke' films! 'Luv ka the end' is a purely commercial film! However not of the usual bollywood type film! Directed by Bumpy and starring Shraddha Kapoor, Pushtiie S., Taaha Shah and many others! Its a short film, which is n...

'On the Seashore' by Rabindranath Tagore

Image
On the seashore of endless worlds children meet.               The infinite sky is motionless overhead and the restless water is boisterous. On the seashore of endless worlds the children meet with shouts and dances.               They build their houses with sand, and they play with empty shells. With withered leaves they weave their boats and smilingly float them on the vast deep. Children have their play on the seashore of worlds.               They know not how to swim, they know not how to cast nets. Pearl-fishers dive for pearls, merchants sail in their ships, while children gather pebbles and scatter them again. They seek not for hidden treasures, they know not how to cast nets.               The sea surges up with laughter, and pale gleams the smile of the sea-beach. Death-dealing waves sin...

The vote of thought (Part 2) - The two Senapatis!

Image
At the end of this season of election, many people caught our sight and got lots of publicity for their good or bad deeds! But, two personalities were always in the limelight, mostly for their good aura! However, both belong to opposite parties - the ruling CPI(M) and the opponent TMC! They are none other than the two leaders, who are leading their soldiers with loads of skill, the senapatis -  Buddhabeb Bhattacharjee and Mamata Banerjee! I am not here to promote any political party, but i could not resist myself from speaking about these two personalities, who are taking this election by storm!                                                                               Actually many things are common between both of them, both are honest politicians, which is very rare now...

'Human' by Kazi Nazrul Islam

Image
Let's sing the song of equality Nothing is greater than human, nor important. No difference in country-time-person, same for all religion, In countries, times, and houses they are relatives. Devotee, open the door, God of hunger is standing at the door, time for devotion. Seeing the dream, eager devotee opened a temple, Surely he will be a king today by the blessing of God. In tattered clothes, lean and thin body, voice is low for hunger Said the traveler, "Sir, open the door, I am starving for seven days." Door of the temple was closed at once, the hungry returns back, Dark night, only lights of hunger are all around the way. The hungry chants "O God, that temple is of devotee, not your." Yesterday was feast in the mosque, a lot of bread and meat Are left, the priest is very happy for that. At this moment a traveler came wearing tattered clothes, Said, "Sir, I am starving for seven days" The priest shouted with annoyance, "Wh...

Discipline and loyalty to be learnt!

Image
Recently, we bid adieu with heavy hearts to our living God Sathya Sai Baba! It is indeed a great loss to the spiritual world and to all his followers! But he has left his ideals behind him for us to follow! And the best thing is that his followers there are really setting a great example after his death! Thousands of visitors were coming everyday to have a last look at the dead body of Baba before he is buried at the Hall today! Everybody who went their to have a last look, witnessed great cooperation from the white dressed with blue scarves NGOs, created by Baba himself to look after his visitors! As we all know Baba never discriminated between his VIP visitors and commoners! In this time of grief many of his followers were sitting there whole day, beside Baba's glass coffin and many had come from faraway places, so they were hungry and tired! But their grief did not make the NGOs weak enough to stop their service! They were continuously moving with a large water container on ...

The vote of thought (Part 1) - How are they actually different?

Image
Every other political party wants us to believe that they are 'different'. The ruling party wants us to believe that after ruling for 35 years they will do even better in the coming years and the oppositions are always ready with one word - 'change'. They want us to believe that if they come to power they would 'rock!' As if Kolkata will turn into London and Darjeeling into Switzerland! RED or GREEN, it seems to be the same thing! Recently i read some incidents in newspapers which i would like to share to highlight my topic! A lady was taking her ailing old neighbour to the hospital, she was not getting any rickshaw, reason - a TMC meeting would be held there within an hour and so they had been asked to stay there to make the place more crowded! If they denied, everyone knows what awaits! So she could not take her to the hospital! And on top of that when the 'meeting' started, the blaring noise made her old neighbour even more ill! It doesn't s...

Anna Hazare's fight against corruption: Battle won, war on!

Image
(Anna Hazare) Why is it that no one goes to jail in our country despite indulging in corruption? This is because we have completely rotten anti-corruption laws and anti-corruption agencies that it is almost impossible for the corrupt to be penalized. The instant of victory came on Saturday at 10.30am. Having humbled a government and captured the imagination of a nation, the frail 73-year-old broke his fast by first offering sips of water to women who had fasted with him. Anna Hazare then had a glass of juice. The Gandhian leader's marathon ended on the fifth morning of his protest with a large crowd of supporters breaking into loud cheers even as hundreds more poured in at Jantar Mantar, ground zero of the campaign to ensure civil society's participation in drafting the Lokpal Bill. Hazare held aloft a copy of the official notification constituting a joint committee and said "In this fight against corruption, India has won, not Anna. You have shown we...

Friendship!

Image
(from left: Tanujit, Me ) God gives us many good gifts, But at the highest of them, friendship sits. The love of a good friend is richer than gold, Its abstract and can never be bought or sold. As the sun repels the darkness of night, In the same way friends fill our life with light. You had been to me a friend great, Your friendship will always be insatiate. Really sweet is friendship's taste, And for my whole life it will remain the best. I hope that God will hearken to my prayer, And forever my wishes for you will be there. Its a new year again! Subho Nabobarsho 1418!

Image
Yet another year passed leaving behind its happy and sad memories to cherish and lament on! On this auspicious day of Nabobarsho we look ahead for a better and greener year ahead so that every life feels up with joy and prosperity! Bengali New Year ( Nabobarsho  or  Poila Boishakh)  is the first day of the  Bengali calendar , celebrated in both  Bangladesh  and  West Benga l , and in Bengali communities in  Assam  and  Tripura . It coincides with the New Year's Days of numerous  Southern Asian  calendars. Poila Boishakh connects all  ethnic Bengalis  irrespective of religious and regional differences. In India, in  West Bengal  and  Assam  it is a public (state) holiday and is publicly celebrated in mid April. In  Bangladesh , it is a national holiday celebrated around 14 April according to the official amended calendar designed by the  Bangla Academy . Poila Boishakh is the...

Some lines by Mother Teresa summing up her philosophy of life!

Image
Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is a beauty, admire it. Life is bliss, taste it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is costly, care for it. Life is wealth, keep it. Life is love, enjoy it. Life is mystery, know it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.
