'Ami Aadu' is really worth the National award!

This film won at the 58th National Award to become the best Bengali feature film. It is directed by Somnath Gupta and it also marks the re-entry of the production house New Theatres Pvt. Ltd. in the world of cinema after 51 years. The casting includes Deblina Chatterjee, Samadarshi Dutta, Mithu Chakraborty, Rudranil Ghosh, Biplab Chatterjee, Bidipta Chakraborty and many more. We can also see the veteran Soumitra Chatterjee in a guest appearance. This film tells a very beautiful love story but in a way which is much different from the usual ones. The film opens with, Aadu, a young girl, pregnant writing a letter in bangla to the then president of US, Bush to stop the Iraq war and get back her husband from Iraq. The narrative shows how she, the daughter of a Brahman got married to his husband, a Muslim, Suleiman. And, how one day on his urge to earn more money he goes off to Iraq to work in a factory with some of other boys from his village. It shows Aadu's emotions. How she marries her love in spite of her mother being against her. However we cannot expect some masala Hindu-Muslim fight here. Things are different. Aadu's evolution is beautiful. Later we also come to hear that Suleiman has lost a hand during the Iraq-US war. The polite acting of the actor who played Suleiman's sister is impressive too.

The story is spun with just the right amount of everything. The music does not play a very important part though the background music is nice. The story is unusual. Deblina, being a new comer could have been a better Aadu at some parts of the movie. However the supporting cast is just awesome. Bidipta is a strong lady who stay in Aadu's parental house's neighbourhood and has been left by her husband. Mithu, Biplab, Rudranil, Pradip, Angana are also good in their own parts. A nice watch!
