Celebration of Woman power in India (Part 2) - Social Welfare

Women in India have always been there when it comes to social work. It really involves strength of mind and a great heart. Maybe this number is less but this one is one of the most significant among all the six - 'Celebration of Woman power in India' posts. Other four are yet to come so keep a watch here, in this blog. We have seen that some women have brought huge changes in the society through their social works. Some of them may have come from completely different fields of work but they have done significant works when it comes to social work.

Margaret came to India, inspired by Swami Vivekananda and she became Sister Nibedita to us, Indians. She has worked largely for the welfare of the people during the British rule in India and till now she is remembered throughout India for her selfless deeds.

When we talk of social welfare, she is the first one who come to my mind, Mother Teresa. She is a personality the whole world looks up to. She was an Albanian Roman by birth and not from India but she considered India her home and has worked for the poor, orphans and victims of severe diseases. She was a living God and India is blessed that she spent almost her whole life here in India, with the Indians. She is one our biggest inspirations.

In recent time, Medha Patkar has created the maximum storms with her social works. She mostly came in the fore ground with the Narmada Bachao Andolan but went on to do much more social work through Singur, Nandigram and supporting Anna Hazare. Whenever there is some problem regarding society, she is the first woman to come ahead.

Dr. Kiran Bedi , a name to recur with. She is the first woman IPS of India and has worked largely for welfare of society when she was in her uniform and now when she is not in her uniform. She has always tried her level best to keep the society of dumps as well as bad people. She also supported Anna Hazare's cause largely. We also see her solving people's problem efficiently in 'Aap ki Kacheri'. She is an inspiration to almost every Indian.

Arundhati Roy is a Booker prize winner author and largely a social activist. She writes in a very strong fashion and she is one of the most famous Indian authors, writing in English. She has supported the socially backward people continuosly and does it even now whenever it is needed. She is a very strong lady.

She is a very famous classical dancer - Alokananda Roy, but came in this list with her recent successful venture of 'Dance Therapy' at the Presidency jail in kolkata, and it is working. Some of the prisoners have learnt to think differently and lead a better life after this life in prison. She has done many social works but this one is the most prominent.

Irom Sharmila Chanu is a name to be recurred with. She is fasting for 11 years to remove the AFSPA from the North-east. However, she has not been heard by the idiots in our Parliament till now. She is continuing with her fast and she is the 'Iron Lady of Manipur'. The heroic deed of her's has shown path to many.
